72 in. Solid Beech Carpenter's Workbench with Front and Tail Vise

A traditional woodworking bench is built around its vises, and this one has two. A front shoulder vise with a wooden screw and turned handle holds boards on edge for planing, sawing and chopping dovetails, and a tail vise at the right end works with a row of square bench-dog holes to clamp long boards flat on the top. The 72 x 24 in. top is laminated from solid European beech strips, close to 3 in. thick, with a tool tray along the back. The base is a sturdy beech trestle with wide feet and a lower shelf for planes and clamps, bolted together so it can be taken apart for a move. Beech is hard, dense and stable - the classic workbench wood - and the hard-oil finish makes glue and dirt easy to scrape off.

Care

The beech top is finished with a hard oil. Brush off shavings after work and wipe the top with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Re-oil the top with a hardwood or workbench oil once or twice a year, or after sanding out deep marks. Put a drop of light oil on the vise screws now and then so they run smoothly, and keep the bench away from direct heat and very damp corners.

Installation and safety

Place the workbench on a flat, level floor and adjust the feet so it does not rock. Spread heavy loads across the whole top, clamp work pieces securely before you saw, drill or plane, and keep children away from tools. Assembly needs two adults and basic hand tools.
