60 in. Adjustable-Height Workbench with Solid Maple Butcher-Block Top

Most workbenches are built for one height; this one fits the job you are doing. A fold-out hand crank on the side raises and lowers the 60 x 30 in. top anywhere between 28 in. and 42 in., so you can sit down for fine work and electronics, stand for planing and sanding, or raise it high for detail work at eye level. The top is a 1.75 in. thick solid maple butcher block, flat and heavy enough to clamp, hammer and saw on, with eased edges that are kind to your forearms. It sits on a black powder-coated steel frame with an under-top storage shelf for hand tools and cases, a low cross-brace for stiffness, and leveling feet that take out the slope of a garage floor.

Care

The maple top comes sealed with a clear finish. Wipe it with a damp cloth and dry it straight away; do not leave standing water, paint thinner or glue on the wood. Lightly sand and re-oil worn areas with a food-safe or butcher-block oil once or twice a year to keep the wood protected. Wipe the steel frame with a damp cloth and mild soap.

Installation and safety

Place the workbench on a flat, level floor and adjust the feet so it does not rock. Spread heavy loads across the whole top, clamp work pieces securely before you saw, drill or plane, and keep children away from tools. Assembly needs two adults and basic hand tools.
