48 in. Wall-Mounted Folding Workbench with Birch Plywood Top

In a one-car garage or a narrow shed, a workbench often loses the battle with the car. This 48 in. folding workbench mounts to the wall and drops down only when you need it. The top is carried by two hinged black steel brackets with fold-out support legs that stand on the floor, so the weight goes into the floor as well as the wall. When you are done, fold the legs in and the top down against the wall, and it sticks out only about 4 in. The top is a 1 in. thick birch plywood panel with a smooth sanded face and a natural edge, stiff enough for sawing, assembling and potting plants. A continuous mounting cleat spreads the load across two or three wall studs, and you choose the working height when you mount it.

Care

Wipe the birch plywood top with a slightly damp cloth and dry it. To protect it from glue, paint and oil, give it a coat of clear wood finish or furniture wax before first use and refresh it when the wood looks dry. Wipe the steel brackets with a damp cloth, and check the wall screws and hinge pins every few months.

Installation and safety

Mount into wall studs or masonry with the included screws and anchors, or with fasteners suited to your wall - do not fix it to drywall alone; mount the top edge at your working height, usually 34 - 36 in.. Use a stud finder and a level, and keep heavy items low and close to the wall. Assembly and mounting take one to two adults and a drill.
